"How Iowa Met Baseball:
The Myths, The History, The Players"
Our October Reminisce Society will tie in with the end of baseball season. John Liepa presents “How Iowa Met Baseball: The Myths, The History, The Players” a program exploring Iowa’s history with baseball. “How Iowa Met Baseball” is a special presentation about the myths regarding the “invention” of baseball, the origins and evolution of the early game in the United States; how the Civil War played a role in accelerating the spread of the game; the very first mention of the game’s coming to Iowa in 1858, and how it caught on.
John brings to life some of the first players from Iowa who played a critical role in the development of the game. He focuses on players from the part of the state where he is presenting the program, and he brings his extensive collection of memorabilia and cards for viewers to see before or after his presentation. John Liepa often does his presentations dressed as Iowa’s first major Leaguer, Cal McVey of Montrose, Iowa who played for the 1869 Cincinnati Redstockings. Please join us October 24th 2017 at the KC Hall across from the library to hear this wonderful presentation about the history of America’s favorite pastime.
The Reminisce Society’s programs are free and open to everyone. If you are a person with a disability who requires special assistance or for further information, please call the library’s director, Sonja Ferrell at 641-682-7563, extension 202.
